JOB SUMMARY

Provide specialized, evidence-based breastfeeding care and education to mothers, infants, and families by promoting safe, holistic, and family-centered practices from preconception to weaning, and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team. Support the mission and vision of the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) and the department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / TASK GROUPS

Greet and create a positive experience for every patient/family, demonstrating a professional, caring, and empathetic approach.Assess and evaluate breastfeeding mothers and infants using evidence-based, age-specific assessment techniques to identify needs or potential complications.Develop individualized lactation care plans and collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive maternal–infant care.Educate and counsel mothers and families on breastfeeding techniques, positioning, milk expression, storage, and management of common lactation challenges.Provide hands-on assistance to mothers with breastfeeding initiation, latching, and maintaining milk supply.Monitor and document mother and infant progress, interventions provided, and outcomes in accordance with hospital and departmental standards.Guide and support mothers in the use, care, and cleaning of breast pumps and related equipment.Identify and manage lactation-related conditions, such as engorgement, mastitis, sore nipples, or low milk production, and refer to physicians when necessary.Collaborate in discharge planning to ensure continuity of breastfeeding support and follow-up care post-discharge.Provide education sessions and materials to staff, patients, and families on breastfeeding and infant nutrition.Participate in quality improvement and educational initiatives related to lactation support, maternal–infant care, and patient satisfaction.Ensure adherence to infection control, patient safety, and hospital policies during all patient interactions and procedures.Perform other duties as requested by the direct supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE / KNOW-HOW:

Knowledge: Knowledge of breastfeeding and lactation care from routine to high-risk situations

Education: 

Minimum Education: Bachelor Degree in Nursing Sciences.

Nursing Colloquium, Nursing License from the Ministry of Public Health, and Registered in the Order of Nurses in Lebanon.

Certification: International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is required.

Experience: 2 - 3 years of experience as a Registered Nurse in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternity, or Newborn Care at AUBMC or 3 - 5 years of experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternity, or Newborn Care in a similar healthcare setting.

Computer Skills: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Applications.
