Summary

To develop in each student an awareness of the role of science in economic and social progress; to motivate each 

student to acquire knowledge of scientific facts principals, and skills in scientific methods of problem solving, to 

discover and develop special talents of students in scientific fields

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teaches skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general science, earth sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, or science problems to secondary students, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  3. Plans a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student experiments; organizes laboratory activities for optimal learning.   
  4. Demonstrates scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher-prepared charts, sketches and other instructional aides.
  5. Provides individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously.
  6. Instructs students in proper use, care, and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment, and plant and animal life.
  7. Provides for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment, and tools.  Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as required.
  8. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior for a productive learning environment during class sessions, laboratory sessions, and field trips.
  9. Evaluates each student's growth in knowledge, skills, and scientific attitudes in course being taught.
  10. Selects and requests books, instructional aides, science equipment, chemicals, and supplies, and maintains inventory records as required.
  11. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities
  12. Identifies students' needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  13. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  14. Assists students in selection and development of individual research projects
  15. Cooperates with school administration in providing science displays and programs for the school and community, and in sponsoring science activities.
  16. Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  17. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
  18. Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
  19. Other duties as assigned by the administrator.

Supervisory Duties 

Supervises students at all times.

Qualifications 

Education/Experience/Certificates

Bachelors Degree and valid Missouri teaching certificate required, Biology Certification preferred; or such alternative to these qualifications that the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Skills and Abilities  

Language 

Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, board policy, administrative procedures/forms, and government regulations and guidelines. Must be able to complete forms, write reports, and engage in written correspondence with parents. Must have the ability to write clearly and complete lesson plans.

Computation

The individual must have the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as

probability and statistical inference; and apply concepts such as fractions, 

percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

Reasoning 

Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must be able to apply knowledge of current educational theory and instructional techniques while presenting subject matter to students.

Technology

The individual must understand basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use. Will be using district software for recording grades and finding student information.

The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform tasks, such as loading and unloading buses.

Terms of Employment

183 days.  Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the 

Board Policy on Evaluation of Certified Staff.
