Overview
Leads Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Financial Planning & Analysis and Cost Accounting Teams, including providing support for the Dartmouth Health System, as an expert at the intersection of data analysis, business intelligence and strategic consulting through formal reports, financial plans and presentation for executive leadership. Promotes a collaborative relationship with Executive, Operational and Finance professionals across the Dartmouth Health System and acts as liaison to system member Finance teams. The Senior Director provides insights that are data-driven to advance decision-making within Dartmouth Health and clarifies complex business issues to recommend solutions using excellent critical thinking skills. Supports the Vice President of FP&A by providing direct and indirect communications, including presentations, meeting attendance, fostering excellent collaboration, building customer relationships and cultivating clinical and business partnerships. The Senior Director will evolve, develop and demonstrate superior skills in providing scenario based modeling through financial analytics and messaging. Aims to blend technical expertise, clinical knowledge and analytical skills to improve outcomes, optimize processes and drive business growth. The Senior Director should demonstrate an ability to generate new ideas and lead a team to effectively develop analytic solutions to advance the organization's mission and strategic goals all while fostering a culture of trust.
This position will be 80% onsite with flexibility for remote time.
Responsibilities
- Leads, develops, and manages the financial analysis and cost accounting teams to offer a strong financial acumen platform set on a foundation of data integrity. Sets high performance expectations and helps the team to achieve them. Helps coordinate cross-functional teams, including assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and resolving conflicts to ensure seamless execution. Anticipates, proactively mitigates, and helps resolve project issues (e.g. scope, delayed deliverables, team dynamics). Creates a positive team culture that promotes excellence and collaboration. Creates an energizing, high functioning work environment. Responsible for the planning, directing and overseeing the operations and fiscal health of the department. Responsible for identification and adherence regarding industry standards, compliance and best practice.
- Is responsible for the Health System cost accounting system through management of the costing team and provides education of the data to internal and external customers on the appropriate utilization and interpretation of the results.
- Leads the annual budget, forecast and strategic planning processes for Dartmouth Health.
- Understands and evaluates the financial performance of the Dartmouth Health system and collaboratively develops accurate financial projections reflecting both operating and capital impacts of services. Takes the lead with management to determine the impact of programs and services on forecasts, operating budgets, capital budgets, and the long-range strategic plan. Identifies opportunities for improvement and makes recommendations. Summarizes and presents findings to leadership.
- Provides consistent, high quality financial support, with a strong emphasis on training and education, to Dartmouth Health and Dartmouth-Hitchcock finance, operating and administrative leadership. Working with staff, creates a structure which builds reliable financial business decision support for the organization, including effective partnerships and communications. Viewed by others as possessing expertise. Exemplifies a mastery of expertise in the formation and execution of work across a variety of topic areas. Appropriately utilizes and advises subordinate team to provide decision support for the Health System.
- Develops and maintains tools to compile, analyze, and interpret monthly system financial results and variances from plan, integrating insights from all Finance leads to create a holistic view of the system's financial performance. Develops and evaluates financial impact models for innovative programs and services. Promotes a Dartmouth Health system perspective and corresponding philosophy of financial stewardship and value-based care across the enterprise, providing educational presentations as necessary.
- Develops strong relationships through credibility and trust as a thought partner with leaders and colleagues, as well as mentoring and developing talent across project team(s). Fosters collaboration within and across teams at all levels of the organization. Must be a superior communicator, able to convey insights in a way that motivates active decision. Influences by thoughtfully considering the optimal sequence, format and structure of communications. Lead projects requiring coordination with cross-functional teams in and outside of the Health System, ensuring seamless execution.
- Identifies strategic opportunities and plans in support of the organizational mission, vision, values and long-range objectives and helps individuals connect their work to the organization's mission. Advocates for continuous improvement and successes and implements best practices.
- Support successful data governance and reporting protocols for key statistical metrics, financials and cost accounting. Partner with key stakeholders to co-develop standard reporting across the Dartmouth Health system to increase availability of actionable core volumes linked to financial, operational and clinical data required for decision making.
- Throughout all financial project management processes:
- Interacts with and influences staff throughout the Dartmouth Health system and Dartmouth-Hitchcock to gather input, test assumptions, and review findings.
- Ensures that all affected parties are represented in appropriate discussions and decisions.
- Promotes an understanding of the financial and organizational impact of each project among team members.
- Efficiently coordinates all aspects of projects to achieve accurate and timely completion.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Finance, Business, Statistics or Healthcare Management strongly encouraged. Bachelor's degree required.
- 12+ years of management, financial planning, budgeting, data analysis, strategy development and stakeholder engagement experience required.
- Experience with a Health Care System, including Academic Medical Center highly desired.
- Proven track record of building, managing and elevating programs that advance organizational goals and mission required.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, business planning, ROI and P&L development is necessary.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to translate and present complex financial data in a way that is understandable to customers including Senior Management.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work both in a team environment and independently, while monitoring, evaluating, training and motivating the performance of subordinates.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to judge the level of confidentiality of information/activities involved in and exhibit integrity in use or dissemination of such information.
