Are you passionate about water safety and making a positive impact? Join our team at the Countryside YMCA, where you'll play a vital role in creating a safe, fun, and welcoming aquatic environment for members of all ages.

What You'll Do

As a YMCA Lifeguard, you'll be the guardian of our aquatic facilities, ensuring every swimmer has a safe and enjoyable experience. Your responsibilities include:

Safety First

  • Maintain vigilant surveillance of pool areas during all aquatic programs, recreational swimming, and lap swimming
  • Respond immediately to emergency situations using YMCA protocols and the "safe-in-six" model
  • Enforce safety rules with professionalism and courtesy
  • Monitor pool chemistry and equipment to maintain optimal conditions

Member Engagement

  • Provide exceptional customer service and positive interactions with members
  • Supervise diverse programs including swimming lessons, fitness classes, and swim team activities
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with participants of all ages

Team Collaboration

  • Work alongside fellow lifeguards and aquatic staff to maintain high safety standards
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in ongoing training
  • Assist with pool maintenance and cleanliness
Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 15 years
  • Current YMCA of the USA or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
  • Valid Basic Life Support, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications
  • Strong swimming abilities and rescue skills
  • Criminal background check required for employees over 18

  • High level of responsibility and maturity
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to remain alert and focused for extended periods
  • Professional demeanor and positive attitude
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Willingness to enforce policies fairly and consistently

Physical Requirements:

  • Pass a comprehensive lifeguard skills test during the interview process
  • Ability to sit in elevated positions for extended periods
  • Strong visual and auditory awareness
  • Capable of lifting up to 25 lbs and performing water rescues
  • Comfortable working in humid, wet conditions with pool chemicals
Training & Development

At the first available opportunity, we'll ask you to complete the following: 

  • YMCA Lifeguard v6 Certification (includes ASHI BLS, First Aid, O2 Administration)
  • YMCA Lifeguard v6 Instructor Certification
  • Aquatic Department Orientation
  • Community Health and Safety program orientation
  • New hire training modules
